College Park Wins Excellence in Financial Reporting Award

Recognized for its comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR)

College Park, GA/May 25, 2017 – College Park has been awarded the distinguished Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA).  The award, presented May 15th, is based on College Park’s submission of its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) for the 2016 fiscal year.

“Recognition by the GFOA as noted continues to reflect the City of College Park’s solid financial management abilities and our overall fiscal acumen,” stated College Park City Manager Terrence H. Moore.

The CAFR is traditionally judged by an impartial panel of finance professionals.  According to a release by the GFOA, the panel examines a presentation’s “spirit of full disclosure” to assess the applicant’s comprehensive financial story and to gage the readability for the end user.

Rodrique Taylor, Accounting Supervisor for the City of College Park says the staff believes greatly in teamwork. “This is a significant honor, mainly due to the fact that it’s the highest recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting, and we’re very proud about that,” he offered.

Taylor emphasized that the department has received multiple awards in recent years, but never tires in its quest to maintain a repeat performance.

“To attain this significant accomplishment is a wonderful achievement that salutes the finance and accounting staff for their hard work and dedication,” Taylor added.

The announcement pleased College Park Mayor Jack P. Longino, who has touted the city’s finances during his annual “State of the City” address.

“Our residents expect us to be responsible with their funds, and this demonstrates our commitment to do so,” said Mayor Longino.  “We welcome the opportunity to share financial information with the College Park community and other stakeholders.  It’s the most basic level of transparency.”

The GFOA established the Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program in 1984 to encourage state and local governments to prepare budget documents of the very highest quality that reflect guidelines established by the National Advisory Council on State and GFOA.

College Park also has multiple Financial Reporting awards to its credit.

“As the City Council continues to maintain high expectations relative to fiscal affairs and first-class management, continued recognition from GFOA represents a resounding reflection of our efforts,” Moore stated.  “We therefore remain extremely humbled and honored to share such successes with both residents and stakeholders.”

GFOA states that the award is a significant achievement by College Park, reflecting the city and staff’s commitment to meet the highest principals of governmental budgeting.
