City of College Park Fire Department Urges Firework Safety Ahead of July 4th Holiday

College Park, GA — July 1, 2025 — As Independence Day approaches, the City of College Park Fire Department is reminding residents to celebrate safely and responsibly when using fireworks. While fireworks are a traditional part of the holiday festivities, improper use can lead to serious injuries and fires.

"Each year, we respond to emergency calls involving fireworks-related injuries and fires," said Fire Chief Sterling Jones. "Our goal is to keep our community safe by encouraging smart and lawful firework use."

Firework Safety Tips from the College Park Fire Department:

  1. Follow Local Laws: Only use legal fireworks. Know what is permitted within College Park city limits.
  2. Supervise Children: Never allow young children to handle fireworks. Older children should be closely supervised.
  3. Use Outdoors Only: Fireworks should only be used outdoors in a clear area away from buildings, vehicles, and flammable materials.
  4. Keep Water Nearby: Always have a bucket of water or a hose ready in case of fire or malfunction.
  5. Light One at a Time: Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly to a safe distance.
  6. Never Relight a Dud: If a firework doesn’t go off, don’t try to relight it. Wait 20 minutes, then soak it in water.
  7. Soak Used Fireworks: After fireworks have burned out, soak them in water before disposing of them in a metal trash can.
  8. Avoid Alcohol While Handling Fireworks: Stay sober when lighting fireworks—impairment increases the risk of injury.

Consider Attending a Professional Show

The College Park Fire Department encourages families to attend professional, permitted fireworks displays for a safer alternative to backyard celebrations.

"We want everyone to enjoy the holiday without putting themselves, their loved ones, or their neighbors at risk," added Chief Sterling Jones.
